These irresistible chocolate-dipped candied oranges are gooey on the inside and bursting with orange and rich dark chocolate flavors. They make the perfect gift for orange/chocolate lovers or a treat for yourself—store-bought won’t even compare!
Ingredients
2 oranges, thinly sliced (about 1/8 inch thick)
2 cups water (plus extra for blanching)
1 cup sugar
100g dark chocolate (72% is ideal)
Instructions
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the orange slices and blanch for 3 minutes to reduce bitterness.
Drain and set aside.
In a large pan over medium heat, combine 2 cups of water and 1 cup of sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
Add the orange slices in a single layer. Simmer for 25–30 minutes, flipping occasionally, until the syrup thickens into bubbles and the oranges are coated in syrup.
Preheat the oven to 170°C (340°F).
Remove the orange slices from the syrup and lay them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes or until just set. Watch closely to prevent over-caramelizing.
Turn off the oven, flip the slices, and leave them inside for another 10 minutes with the door closed.
Let the slices cool for a few minutes before gently peeling them off the parchment.
Chop the dark chocolate and place it in a small saucepan. Set it over a larger saucepan with simmering water (double boiler method).
Allow the chocolate to melt gently without stirring too soon. Once the chocolate has fully melted, stir until smooth and glossy.
Dip each candied orange slice halfway into the melted chocolate, letting the excess drip off. Place on a clean sheet of parchment paper.
Let the chocolate set at room temperature.
For storage: Layer the slices between sheets of parchment paper in an airtight container. Store at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or refrigerate for longer freshness.
